FOB vs CIF Adhesive Tape Shipment into the Philippines

How FOB and CIF work on an adhesive tape shipment into Manila, Batangas or Cebu: the transfer point, the documents, and what the importer keeps.

Under either term the risk in a carton of tape passes to the Philippine buyer when the goods are loaded on board at the nominated Shenzhen port; what changes between FOB and CIF on this lane is who books that vessel and who pays the ocean freight, and neither change moves the clearance, the terminal charges or the inter-island leg. The receiving side of a Philippine order usually involves a domestic hop the term never describes, which makes that more important here than on a single-port destination.

Where the term actually bites for a Philippine buyer

A shipment into Manila, Batangas or Cebu arrives into a consignee's obligations no matter who prepaid the freight: import clearance, duty and tax, terminal handling on discharge, the carrier's release and the free-time clock all sit with the importing entity under either term. Beyond that, the destination is an archipelago. Our Philippines market page states that we ship to Manila, Batangas and Cebu and that for other islands the importer normally arranges the domestic leg, with us supplying the export documents that handover needs. So the review turns on two questions: who controls the sea booking, and how far responsibility reaches after discharge. If the answer to the second is "to the plant door in Cavite", the term that describes it is a door term agreed per order, not CIF with a port name.

Ports, hubs and the transit this site publishes

Sea freight runs from Shenzhen to Manila and South Harbor, Batangas or Cebu, and the Philippines market page states 5–9 days port to port on that lane, with LCL consolidation for smaller orders. Samples and urgent quantities travel by express or air, which the same page states at 2–5 working days door to door. Those are published ranges for the route, not a date for your order: the sailing and arrival window is confirmed at quotation against the destination port. We ship into Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas and Cebu, and the destination city decides more about the final leg than the ocean term does.

The five things we review before pricing an FOB vs CIF choice

  1. Named place and edition. The term as printed, with the port or address and the rules edition; FOB without a port and CIF without a destination are unusable on a customs document.
  2. Who holds the booking. On FOB Shenzhen that is your forwarder: your schedule, your routing, their destination charge list. On CIF the booking is ours and the arrival notice comes from our agent.
  3. The cover level. CIF obliges a minimum cargo class at the invoice value plus ten per cent; a tropical leg with a connection is where buyers ask for the wider one, priced as its own line.
  4. Freight inclusions on discharge. Whether the quoted freight covers lifting the container off the vessel and destination terminal handling, or stops at the far-side ship's rail.
  5. The inland and inter-island plan. Where the goods must physically arrive, who books that hop, and which documents the local broker will ask the importer for. Freight, insurance and destination-charge amounts are quoted against your destination port once that review is done.

Friction points we see on this lane

Groupage is the first. LCL into Manila or Cebu hands the cartons to a consolidator's terminal before anything is loaded on board, so the seller's last moment of real control comes earlier than the abbreviation implies; naming the terminal and the handover point removes the argument. Product requirements are the second: goods entering the Philippines can attract certification or marking obligations that depend on the product and on the importer, and the current requirement belongs in the enquiry rather than in an assumption drawn from a technical file. Documentation is the third: the carton marks, the packing list numbers and the document set have to agree, because that chain is what incoming inspection and any claim rest on.

Local-language summary

Delivery and document flow

Packed cartons leave our Shenzhen plant against a booking placed by whichever party the term names. We issue the commercial invoice carrying the same term and named place, a packing list whose carton count, weights and measurements match the physical pack, the transport document the carrier releases, and the origin paperwork your broker uses where preferential treatment is claimed. Lot marks on the technical set reach the incoming material batch, the adhesive lot, the slitting date and the inspection record. Documents are issued in English and the current files are listed in the document library.

What to send with your enquiry

  • Destination city or port, and whether the goods travel further than it
  • The term you want priced, and the one you are comparing it against
  • Your forwarder or broker, and who will hold the booking
  • Whether you need cover above the CIF minimum class, and in which currency
  • Full container or groupage expectation, and the release pattern for the grade

Contact

Email yantian0606@gmail.com or WhatsApp 8613554863137 and we price both terms against the same Philippine destination port on one sheet, with open items marked, through our quote request. Shipments from Shenzhen run by sea, air and express with LCL consolidation; all lanes are on the markets overview.

Commercial and process terms on this page are the questions a converter has to answer, not a standing offer. Order quantities, lead times, tooling charges, sample terms, freight and payment structures are confirmed at quotation against your drawing, your material and your destination, and only figures already published elsewhere on this site are stated as commitments.
