Low-VOC Adhesive Tapes for Automotive Interiors

Bonding trim, linings, seals and labels inside the cabin, where the substrate is often low-energy or recycled and the emission limit is set by the programme rather than by the tape.

The problem

Why this application is difficult

An interior bond is judged twice: once on the assembly line and once in a laboratory that measures what the cabin gives off. The parts make it harder at the same time, because recycled polypropylene, olefin skins and soft-touch coatings vary in surface energy from batch to batch, and a bond that passes this month can fail after a supplier changes a mould release agent. Tape is a small part of a vehicle and a large part of an emissions complaint, so the construction, the adhesive and the dwell all have to be documented.

Our approach

What we review before proposing a material

Substrate and batch review

We ask what the panel is actually made of, including recycled content, coating and any mould release, because surface energy and contamination decide the construction more than the part shape does. When a supplier changes a batch the bond has to be re-checked, so we record what was tested and against what.

Emission and odour limits

Low-VOC and low-fogging behaviour is a property of the whole construction, not a line on a brochure. Tell us the limit document your customer applies and we shortlist materials against it and state which data exists for each option.

Fixing method for the part

Light rigid trim, a thin decorative film and a heavy lining each need a different balance of initial tack, creep resistance and edge lift control. We review the load, the curvature and whether the part has to survive heat soak after assembly.

Converting and line presentation

Interior parts are usually die-cut with apertures, fold-back tabs and a liner an operator can release one-handed. The presentation is agreed with the line before tooling is cut, because a good bond that cannot be placed is not a good part.

What you get

  • Material shortlisted against the emission document you are working to
  • Bond reviewed for the actual substrate, including recycled content
  • Edge lift and creep discussed before tooling rather than after a field claim
  • Die-cut parts delivered on a liner the operator can work with
  • Batch records so a material change can be traced back to a work order

FAQ

Can tape bond to low surface energy plastics?
Sometimes with a construction chosen for the surface, and sometimes only with a pre-treatment. Surface energy, mould release and any coating decide the answer, so we ask for the actual panel and propose a trial rather than promising a bond from a data sheet.
What is the difference between low-VOC and low-fogging?
Low-VOC describes what a material gives off into the cabin air; low-fogging describes what condenses on a cold surface such as a windscreen. A construction can do one and not the other, so we check both against the requirement you were given.
Do you hold low-emission grades in stock?
Availability depends on the grade and the current supplier, so we confirm what is on hand at enquiry together with the documents for that batch.
Can you help when an interior part lifts after a heat cycle?
Yes, if the failure mode can be described. We look at the substrate, the adhesive contact area, the load and the temperature history before proposing what to change. A part that lifts in the field usually tells you which of those four was the constraint.
