What actually decides the grade in this family

A family is not a product. These are the questions that narrow it down to one construction, in the order we ask them.

The gap you have to bridge

Foam thickness is chosen so the whole bond line stays in contact after the parts are pressed together. A tape that is too thin bonds only at the high points of the surface, which is why a good sample can fail on the second batch.

Surface energy after the foam wets out

Foam cores need pressure and time to wet low-energy plastics and powder coats. The same construction that holds glass can lift at the corner of a textured bumper.

Panel stiffness and bond width

Viscoelastic acrylic foam carries load by spreading stress over area. A thin, flexible panel behaves differently from a stiff one under the same tape, so joint design comes before grade selection.

Outdoor exposure

UV, thermal cycling and damp heat age the bond line, not the roll in the carton. Exterior applications are shortlisted on aged performance rather than fresh peel.

Whether the joint must ever be opened

Foam tapes are built to hold. Removal usually needs heat, a cutting wire or destruction of the part, so a serviceable design is a different conversation.

Application conditions on the line

Foam needs roller pressure, a clean surface and a dwell period before it is loaded. If the assembly is loaded immediately, that belongs in the process plan.

Which construction inside this family

ConstructionUsual reason to choose itWhat to check first
Acrylic foam (VHB-style)High peel and shear on metal, glass and rigid plastics in exterior and structural joints.Needs application pressure and dwell; verify the joint design before the grade.
PE foamConforming mount of signage, appliance panels and irregular surfaces at lower cost.Lower high-temperature and long-term load performance than acrylic foam.
PU foamGap filling, cushioning, sealing and vibration damping where strength is secondary.Open-cell variants take up moisture; check the exposure.
Closed-cell foam with acrylic adhesiveWeather seals and gaskets that must not absorb water.Compression set after cycling decides the seal, not initial thickness.
Foam with two different adhesivesOne side permanent, one side removable, or one side bonded to a difficult substrate.Confirm which face is which on the drawing and on the liner marking.

Every row is a starting point for a test, not a promise about your joint. The third column is the part that usually decides the outcome.

How this product is ordered

These are the items a quotation has to settle before material is cut. Each one is confirmed against your order, so no figure on this page is a standing commitment.

Specification itemWhat we confirm
Core and skinFoam type, thickness and the adhesive on each face; asymmetric constructions are stated face by face.
Thickness and toleranceNominal thickness with the tolerance band you need, confirmed against the order rather than quoted as a generic figure.
FormatJumbo or slit roll, pre-cut lengths, die-cut gaskets or parts on a slit liner.
Width and lengthSlit width and metres per roll, with roll outer diameter limited to what your dispenser or applicator takes.
LinerType, thickness and release level; extended or slit liner for automated pick-up.
Primer or adhesion promoterWhether the application needs one, and who supplies it. We state the recommendation with the sample rather than leaving it to the line.
Storage and shelf handlingFoam rolls are packed flat and unloaded so the cell structure is not set in transit; pallet stacking weight is limited accordingly.
MOQ and timingSample rolls and die-cut samples are available. Production quantity and dates are confirmed at quotation once construction and format are fixed.

How a claim about this product gets tested

What gets verifiedHow it is measured
Peel after dwellMeasured on your substrate after the bonding procedure we recommend, because a fresh peel number on foam tells you very little.
Static shear at temperatureThe load held at the top of the service range, which is where an exterior joint is actually won or lost.
Thermal cycling and damp heatCycle the assembly, then re-test; the result is what a humid, hot climate reports back.
Compression setHow much the foam recovers after being held compressed, which decides a seal as much as adhesion does.

Ask for the method and the condition, not only the number: the same material reads differently on a clean test panel and on a part from your line.

How it is packed for export

  • Foam is packed so nothing rests on the face of the roll, because a compressed edge does not spring back.
  • Cartons are sized to the roll outer diameter rather than filled to a common box size, and are marked with thickness, width, lot and quantity.
  • Exterior grades are kept out of sunlight and away from heat during storage and loading; foam left on a dock in the sun behaves differently on the line.
  • Pallets for sea freight use ISPM 15-marked heat-treated or ply/plastic material, wrapped and corner-protected.
  • Die-cut foam parts ship on their liner in flat boxes, with the pick order and sheet count stated on the label.

Freight term, routing and destination charges are stated on the quotation. The technical guides and the logistics notes explain how each line is derived.

Questions buyers ask about Foam Tape

Which foam tape should I use for exterior automotive trim?
Acrylic foam tape is usually the starting point because it combines high peel and shear strength with good aging performance. The final choice depends on the substrate, surface energy, gap, temperature and load; we confirm it with test data.
Can foam tape replace screws or rivets?
In many exterior and panel applications, yes. The joint design, substrate stiffness and expected load must be reviewed; we can propose a tape and test plan before validation.
How thick should double sided tape be for uneven surfaces?
Choose a compressible foam thick enough to bridge the gap and keep the whole bond line in contact. Where the gap is large or varies across the part, mechanical fixing or a moulded feature is more reliable than tape.
Do you supply tape in custom widths and shapes?
Yes. We slit to width and die-cut or laser-cut custom shapes, including multi-layer laminations.
How does humidity affect foam tape?
Humidity and UV affect adhesive performance over time. We recommend grades and surface preparation based on the target climate, and can provide aging test data for the selected product.
Can you provide samples for testing?
Yes. We supply sample rolls or die-cut samples for your internal validation before mass production.
Does foam tape need a primer?
Sometimes, and it depends on the surface rather than the tape. Low-energy plastics, fresh powder coats and textured finishes often need an adhesion promoter to let the foam wet out. We would rather test your part with and without and tell you which one the process needs, because a primer added by guesswork costs cycle time and buys nothing.
Can foam tape be applied in a cold or humid plant?
It can, but the surface and the adhesive have to be brought into condition first: cold, damp and dusty surfaces are the usual reason a foam joint fails at the edge. Cleaning, drying, adequate pressure and a dwell period before loading fix most of it. Tell us the line conditions and we will write them into the bonding procedure instead of leaving them to the operator.
Why did a foam tape fail at the corners of my part?
Corner lift is normally a wet-out or stress-concentration problem: the tape bridges the high points, the corner never gets full contact, and thermal movement then concentrates the stress there. The fix is usually a thicker or softer core, more application pressure, a primer, or a radius change on the part. Send the failed piece and we will say which one it is.
How wide should the bond line be on a large panel?
Width is chosen with the panel stiffness and the load, not from a rule of thumb. A stiff panel with a defined load needs a calculable area; a thin, flexing sheet needs a softer core and often a continuous bead pattern. We review the joint drawing with you before recommending a width, because the wrong answer here is a warranty claim rather than a rejected shipment.
