Battery Fixing Tapes: Permanent and Removable

Holding a cell or a module in place while leaving a defined way to take it out again, which is the requirement that separates a battery tape from every other bonding job.

The problem

Why this application is difficult

A battery bond has to hold through vibration and thermal cycling and, where the pack is designed to be serviceable, it also has to let go on purpose. Both requirements are absolute and they conflict. Devices get heavier in the battery and thinner in the chassis at the same time, so the tape carries more load in less space, and whoever opens the pack later should not have to pry at a live cell.

Our approach

What we review before proposing a material

Wrap and fix

The cell is wrapped in a single-sided film and the wrap is bonded to the housing, so the cell lifts out of a sleeve rather than off an adhesive layer. This route usually uses a thinner multi-layer construction, and the wrap is part of the design.

Permanent fixing

Maximum hold and impact resistance, chosen where the pack is not designed to be opened. It suits thin designs, and it is the route that makes later service a heat or force problem rather than a routine step.

Stretch release

A die-cut tape is bonded to the cell and pulled at end of life; the construction elongates and the bond releases with little residue. Tear resistance and release force both matter, and the pull tab is a design feature, not an accessory.

Solvent release

High initial hold that drops when a solvent reaches the bond line, which allows a thin design to be opened without force. The solvent, the dwell time and how the housing vents all have to be agreed before it is used.

What you get

  • Release behaviour treated as a specification item, not a hope
  • Four fixing routes compared against the actual pack design
  • Thin constructions that leave room for capacity
  • Die-cut parts with the tab and liner format your line needs
  • Material documents supplied for the grade actually selected

FAQ

Does a removable battery tape weaken the bond?
It changes what the bond does at end of life, which is a different question from strength. A removable construction is chosen so the hold during service and the release at the bench are both acceptable. A permanent tape is harder to release, and that is the problem it creates rather than the benefit it offers.
Can you supply a flame-rated grade?
Flame behaviour belongs to a specific grade and its document, not to a tape family. Tell us the requirement and we confirm what is available with the record that supports it.
How do you choose between stretch release and solvent release?
By how the pack is opened in practice. Stretch release needs room to pull and a tab someone can grip; solvent release needs the solvent to reach the bond line. Both are decisions made before the housing is closed.
Does the tape survive electrolyte and cell venting?
Exposure to electrolyte is a material question with a grade-specific answer. Describe the exposure and we state what data exists, or propose the test that would establish it.
