What we solve

Coil change downtime

The first metres of a coil decide whether the run holds tension or stops the line.

Oil, sharp edges and heat

Metal surfaces are oily, burr-edged and sometimes warm when the tape goes on.

Surface rejection

A scratched sheet, or protection that leaves residue, is rejected downstream rather than reworked.

Transit damage

Edges and corners take the hits in a container, on a flatbed and in the yard.

Weather exposure

Coils and cut parts sit outdoors between the mill and the workshop.

How a typical project runs

Core starting and end tabbing on a slitting line

01

Challenge

A service centre was losing tension at coil start and finding strips unfurling at the end of the run, and both stopped the line.

02

Approach

We tested core starting and end tab tapes against the coating oils, strip thickness and line speed actually in use, then agreed the application procedure with the operators.

03

Outcome

Coil starts held and the tabs survived storage and loading, and the tape became a line checklist item instead of a consumable someone grabbed from the shelf.

FAQ

Will protective tape leave residue on steel or aluminium?
Residue depends on surface energy, oil, temperature and how long the film stays on. We match the removal window to your process and test it on your material before it becomes a specification.
Can you supply protection for profiles and edges?
Yes. Protective film, tape and edge protection are slit or die-cut to the section you produce.
Which tape holds a coil core at line start?
High-tack heavy-duty grades, chosen for strip weight, core diameter and speed. We sample against your coil data.
Do you ship to mills and service centres abroad?
Yes, with export packing and the documents your importer needs. Terms and quantities are confirmed per enquiry.

Where tape fails on metal, and what it usually means

Metal is the surface people trust most and specify least. These are the failures we get asked about, and what each one actually points at.

SymptomWhat it usually points atWhat fixes it
Strip releases at coil startSurface oil, core tension or a tape whose grab depends on a clean surfaceA high-tack grade matched to the coating oil, plus the application procedure
Residue after fabricationThe removal window was exceeded, or the film sat in sun and heatA grade specified by its removal window, not by its initial stick
Edge cut-throughA burr or a corner the tape was never meant to carryA thicker backing or a protective profile at that edge
Film lifts at a bend or drawExtension at the radius that the backing cannot followA conformable backing, or film applied before forming
Splice breaks in the lineJoin method, or a splice angle the line speed does not allowBacking and splice technique matched to speed and tension
Yard weatheringUltraviolet and rain for weeks, on a tape chosen for the shop floorAn outdoor-rated protection and a stated exposure limit

Protection has an expiry date, and it is the property nobody specifies

A protective film is a promise with a time limit: it holds until a stated exposure, then it stops being removable cleanly. The failures we see are almost always a film that was specified as a material and used as a permanent feature.

  • State the exposure the part will really see: weeks in a yard, a container crossing the equator, or a shop floor for two shifts
  • Ask for the removal window as a number of months under defined conditions, and treat anything beyond it as a failure you have planned for
  • Check the surface temperature at application, because a film put on warm steel behaves differently from one put on cold steel
  • Test on the oil left by your own process, not on a cleaned laboratory panel
  • Decide before ordering whether the film comes off before or after forming, coating, cutting or welding, since that changes the grade
  • Keep one approved protection per product line, and re-check it when the mill, the coating or the transit route changes
FAQ

Mill, service centre and workshop questions

Can you supply protection that survives powder coating or anodising?
That is a process-specific question, so it is answered with a trial on your line rather than a catalogue claim. Tell us the bath, the bake temperature and the dwell and we shortlist candidates and sample them.
Do you supply heavy rolls as well as converted parts?
Yes. Slit rolls, wide rolls and die-cut protection pieces all come from the same material base, which is usually where a fabricator saves the most handling time.
Which backing should we standardise on?
The one your surfaces, your weather and your removal window allow, which is why we would rather see the process than recommend a favourite. Once chosen it is recorded so the re-order matches.
Can you help when a coil customer complains about residue?
Yes, and the first step is finding out how long the film was actually on. Residue is a time and temperature story far more often than it is an adhesive quality story.
Do you export to mills and service centres?
Yes, with export packing and the documents your importer needs; terms, quantities and lead time are confirmed per enquiry.
