Polyimide Tape FAQ: Reflow Heat, Gold Fingers and Residue
Twelve questions on polyimide tape: reflow and wave masking, dwell versus peak, gold fingers, laser cutting, residue,…
Read this answer setTen questions for a double sided tape manufacturer on peel, tack, hold power, dwell, low-energy plastics and removal, answered with the test method.
Ten questions decide whether a double sided tape construction is right for a joint: which surfaces meet, whether the load is peel or shear, and whether the part lives between −40 °C and +200 °C in service. Each answer below gives the conclusion first and the test method second.
Peel adhesion is the force needed to propagate a separation at a set angle and speed, initial tack is how fast the layer grabs at the station, and hold power is how long that bond carries a static load. Datasheets usually publish one of the three, so read which one before comparing grades.
ASTM D3330 pulls a bonded strip back at a defined angle and speed and reports force per width, which tells you how the joint behaves on that exact surface at that thickness under those lab conditions, and nothing at all about your panel until the two lists match. Ask which substrate was used, and run the same test on your own coated or moulded part.
Because the three mechanisms that break bonds work slowly, moisture arriving at the interface, ultraviolet light degrading a rubber layer, and creep under a load that was never removed, and a quick pull test at the line cannot see any of them. Aging under load, in the destination climate, is the only test that predicts it.
Dwell depends on chemistry, temperature and load direction, and the handling-strength figures usually quoted, from minutes to a few days, are indicative industry ranges, not our commitment; what we commit to is a measured value on your substrate. Warm assembly speeds acrylic, cold slows both. The glossary defines dwell, creep and wet-out.
Yes: peel and shear values are measured near room temperature, while a bond line that is cold-soaked or sitting in a hot enclosure behaves as a different material, so a grade chosen at twenty degrees can be too stiff to wet a surface at minus ten. Request the test at your service temperature.
Low surface energy means the adhesive cannot wet the moulding, so contact is only as good as the peaks the layer touched, and edge lift within weeks is the usual outcome on untreated parts; the dependable routes are an acrylic construction with a wetting layer or plasma treatment first. Corona works too, if the line owns the equipment.
Yes, once the coating is fully cured and fine enough for the layer to wet it, and once the test runs on a real panel after a dwell rather than on a clean coupon, because a fresh coat can look bonded and then lift. Storage time, bake profile and handling oil all change the result.
A thin bond line needs both faces flat, because the layer has no volume to flow into a profile, so on a textured moulding the contact area in your quotation does not physically exist; standard constructions here run 0.05 to 1.0 mm total thickness. Where relief exists, a compressible carrier or a thicker foam-backed build is the alternative; the product page lists the families we cut.
Removal is a surface project, not an adhesive one: the outcome depends on whether the coating is fully cured, how old the bond is, whether heat is applied and how fast the operator peels, so write the procedure against a scrapped part first. Residue usually means the layer split internally instead of releasing from one face.
Send the two surfaces with their finish and any treatment, the mass and force the joint carries, the temperature and humidity in service and in transit, whether failure would be visible, and either a drawing or a dimensioned photograph of the sample. With those items we name a construction and the test that would disprove it; shipping from Shenzhen and quoting terms are on our general FAQ.
Commercial and process terms on this page are the questions a converter has to answer, not a standing offer. Order quantities, lead times, tooling charges, sample terms, freight and payment structures are confirmed at quotation against your drawing, your material and your destination, and only figures already published elsewhere on this site are stated as commitments.
