Twelve questions about the custom die cut adhesive parts buyers actually order, answered for the moment between the enquiry and the tool: what gets stated against your drawing, what gets confirmed at the review, and what nobody honest promises in an email. Each answer gives the conclusion first.

How is the tolerance on custom die cut adhesive parts stated?

Tolerances depend on material, thickness, part size and the cutting route, so the achievable tolerance we hold is stated against your drawing before the tool is cut rather than as a generic number. Treat a supplier who offers one figure for foam parts and PET parts alike as guessing; see the tolerance guide.

I only have a physical sample. Can you quote from it?

Yes: a clean sample can be reversed into a drawing: measure the layer stack, scan the outline and propose the material from the surfaces and the load, then send the drawing back for your approval before tooling is quoted.

What is the difference between a kiss cut and a die cut?

Kiss cutting severs the material layer and leaves the release liner intact, so parts stay in position for peeling or machine pickup, while full die cutting separates the part through the liner too, giving an individual piece ready to install. Your feeder decides which one you should buy.

Do you remove the waste matrix between the parts?

For most parts, yes: we strip the waste matrix after cutting so the remaining pieces sit on the liner in position, while very small or delicate parts get weeded by hand, held on a back-perforated liner, or fully cut and kitted, decided at the drawing review.

Some of my parts lift when the matrix is stripped. What are the options?

Lift during stripping is a known constraint on light or delicate parts and there are three fallbacks: hand weeding, a back-perforated liner that weakens the matrix without breaking it, or full cutting with kitting, decided at the drawing review.

Can you supply parts on a slit liner for automated feeding?

Yes: kiss-cut parts on a slit liner are the standard presentation for pick-and-place stations, with PET liner in the 25 to 100 µm band, parts registered in position and curl controlled by liner weight and web direction set on the drawing before tooling.

Can you cut adhesive dots or multi-point patterns instead of full sheets?

Adhesive dots and multi-point patterns are ordinary converting jobs, cut on a slit liner and run by rotary or flat-bed tooling, with the spacing between dots and the exposed carrier area confirmed against the bond your joint actually needs.

What files do you need to quote a die cut?

A PDF, DXF or STEP drawing with the dimensions and the tolerance that matters is the fast path, while a sample or a dimensioned photograph also works provided the material class, the annual volume and the use on the line come with it.

Can we prototype before hard tooling exists?

Yes: laser cutting or low-cost flat-bed tooling produces custom die cut prototypes for fit and function testing before hard steel is committed, with prototype quantities available, production quantities agreed per part, and the review stating whether the two routes differ at the edge.

Is tooling cost separate from the part price?

Tooling is quoted separately because it depends on shape, size, material and whether the route runs flat-bed, rotary or laser, while the part price is material plus converting steps, and we advise which route gives the most economical tool at your volume.

Which materials can be die cut as parts?

PET, foam, non-woven, transfer tape, PI, aluminum foil, conductive tape and laminated constructions are all cut here, each family carrying its own thickness band: foam 0.4 to 3.0 mm, functional PI and PET 0.03 to 0.3 mm by grade, double-sided builds 0.05 to 1.0 mm total or customised. The product page lists the families and formats we convert day to day.

How is first-article inspection done, and what should the report show?

A first article is measured against your drawing as a project item: the dimensions and datums named on the print, visual criteria for the edge and the cleanliness level, filed with the production lot record so shipment and measurement stay together. Ask for the FAI in the RFQ, not after the launch; the die-cutting service page shows where it sits in the flow.

Commercial and process terms on this page are the questions a converter has to answer, not a standing offer. Order quantities, lead times, tooling charges, sample terms, freight and payment structures are confirmed at quotation against your drawing, your material and your destination, and only figures already published elsewhere on this site are stated as commitments.
