Foam Tape Supplier FAQ: Gap Bridging, Cold and Creep

Ten questions on an EMI shielding tape or grounded conductive part, answered by how the joint is verified rather than by what a datasheet headline claims, because in this family the interface, not the roll, is the specification.
Grounding continuity means two parts held at the same potential through a stable low-resistance path, and on a taped joint it is verified by measuring the assembled interface on the real mating surface and pressure, with the test method named on the report. A loose-roll reading is not the same claim as a released joint.
Because the current crosses an interface rather than a block of metal, and that interface is set by the oxide film, the mating finish, the asperity contact and the fastening pressure long before bulk resistivity plays a meaningful role. A carrier that reads excellent in bulk can still underperform at the joint.
No, because shielding effectiveness is a measured result of an enclosure, its seams and its test setup rather than an attribute of a single tape roll, so it is not something we publish as our product data. What you specify is the seam design and the verification method, and the number comes from a report on your own assembly.
The carrier is chosen against the mating metal, the environment and whether the surface runs flat or rounded, not against a simple conductivity ranking, because the joint rather than the block decides the path. Copper suits forgiving internal grounds, nickel-silver resists oxidation drift, aluminum fits light cost-led seams, and fabric conforms over curves.
Flammability is grade-dependent, so a UL94 statement is given per the exact selected grade together with a supporting document rather than as an automatic property of the whole family, and the carrier, adhesive and paper must match that grade. Name a flame requirement early so the construction can be matched to it.
Halogen-free status is grade-dependent and is declared per the selected grade with supporting documentation rather than asserted across a whole category of specialty tape, since the carrier, the adhesive and any functional layer are separate materials. Ask for the document that describes the exact construction ordered.
They act on the interface rather than the datasheet, because thermal cycles thicken oxides, drive galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals and can relax an adhesive until the contact pressure falls away at the joint. Request aging framed as the change in joint resistance across the cycles your product sees.
It can, because a shield leaks at its seams and edges and foil crushes or burs as it is cut, which alters the contact and can shed particulate into a module in service. The edge standard is agreed under the magnification the assembly uses, with tolerance stated against your drawing before tooling is cut.
Compare the carrier material and surface state, the contact resistance measured on the assembled joint with its method named, the aging drift across your own cycle profile, and the edge and cleanliness standard, each with its record attached to it. A grade name alone is not a specification.
Roll stock can be provided for a bench trial and prototype quantities of a converted part are available with fit and function checked before any production commitment, with production quantities agreed per part once the geometry is signed. Sample and production timing depends on material availability and route and is confirmed at quotation.
Commercial and process terms on this page are the questions a converter has to answer, not a standing offer. Order quantities, lead times, tooling charges, sample terms, freight and payment structures are confirmed at quotation against your drawing, your material and your destination, and only figures already published elsewhere on this site are stated as commitments.
